The Rules of 501 Darts
501 is the most widely played darts format, both in professional competitions and amateur pub tournaments. Here's everything you need to know to play.
How it Works
Each player starts with a score of 501 points. Each turn (3 darts), the total points scored are subtracted from the remaining score. The first player to reach exactly 0 wins the leg.
The Double to Finish
The most important rule in 501: you must finish the game by hitting a double (the thin outer band of the board) or the double bull (the centre, 50 points). This is called the "checkout".
For example, if you have 32 points left, you need to hit double 16 to win.
Board Sections
- Single: the large area between the two thin bands (face value)
- Double: the thin outer band (×2)
- Treble: the thin inner band (×3)
- Outer bull: the green circle (25 points)
- Bullseye (double bull): the small red centre circle (50 points, counts as a double)
Key Checkout Scores
| Remaining Score | Recommended Checkout |
|---|---|
| 170 | T20, T20, Bull (highest possible finish) |
| 141 | T20, T19, D12 |
| 100 | T20, D20 |
| 80 | T20, D10 |
| 40 | D20 |
| 32 | D16 |
| 16 | D8 |
The "Bust"
If your score goes below 0, drops to exactly 1 (impossible to finish on a double), or you reach 0 without hitting a double, your turn is cancelled. Your score reverts to what it was before the turn. This is called a bust.
Match Formats
Matches are usually played in legs:
- Best of 3: first to 2 legs
- Best of 5: first to 3 legs
- Best of 7: first to 4 legs (often in finals)
Popular Variations
Double In
Some tournaments require starting with a double too. Less common in amateur tournaments.
301
Same rules as 501 but starting from 301 points. Shorter games, often played double in / double out.
Tips for Beginners
- Aim for 20: it's the highest-scoring single and treble area
- Learn your finishes: memorise classic checkouts (40 = D20, 32 = D16, etc.)
- Practice your doubles: this is what wins matches
- Stay consistent: three single 20s (60) beats a missed treble every time
